“In 2018, I presented a major art installation inspired by Dungeons & Dragons at the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. The public programs that accompanied the exhibition included a series of D&D adventures created by Michael Manson to introduce gallery visitors to the game. As my installation took its cues from Gary Gygax’s iconic module B2: The Keep on the Borderlands, Michael penned three interlinked prequel scenarios that explored the origin story of that much-loved dungeon. These lovingly crafted adventures elegantly conveyed the fundamentals of the D&D experience to new players, as well as being riddled with in-jokes and references that catered to experienced players’ nostalgia for the Caves of Chaos.
